The Specialist, Lyo Equipment is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining our key HVAC assets including our critical freeze dryers. The incumbent will oversee all lyophilizer refrigeration equipment including the mechanical operation, controls, electrical and mechanical installation, equipment optimization, effective/efficient equipment operation, electrical/electronic systems, and preventive maintenance. This role is responsible for maintaining lyo refrigeration records to include data input in the refrigeration software (RCMS) and Maintenance Database (CMMS), filing of records, issuing of reports, and any upkeep required.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for maintaining compliance requirements for refrigeration equipment at BIAH sites.

  • Troubleshoots or repairs mechanical failures / faults with the lyophilization systems.

  • Proactively evaluates lyophilizer system functionality to identify and prevent system issues that may result in equipment downtime.

  • Completes emergency repairs when necessary to offset downtime and production delays.

  • Readily available for emergency call-backs as required and flexible with work hours including holidays or plant shutdowns.

  • Works with storeroom for timely procurement and acquisition of parts needed for freeze dryer repairs and maintenance.

  • Responsible for decision making when it comes to adjustment and repair of the equipment to achieve maximum performance.

  • Coordinates with Engineering, Quality, Filling, and outside vendors to ensure mechanical readiness of the lyophilization systems.

  • Addresses noncompliance issues in a timely manner, with appropriate action plans and required reporting to corporate and regulatory functions.

  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records in RCMS and CMMS systems of refrigerate use, procurement/inventory, and disposal at BIAH sites.

  • Works with engineering, maintenance and EHS personnel to develop appropriate engineering specifications, training, standard operating procedures, and preventative maintenance tasks for all new and existing lyo equipment.

  • Provides necessary review and oversight when installing, repairing, or investigating equipment associated with the freeze dryers (including contractors) to ensure proper execution and quality services.

  • Coordinates with Planner/Scheduler and supervisors to ensure that adequate scheduling information is communicated and that work orders are completed within compliance windows.

  • Manages and tracks utilities usage to ensure accurate data is available for analysis and global reporting requirements.

  • Provides leadership in site energy committees.

  • Calculates and tracks savings realized from improvement initiatives.

  • Prepares and provides regular status updates for GFE management and senior leadership.

  • Responds and participates in regulatory audits as needed.

Requirements

  • H.S. Degree or GED.

  • Alongside HS degree/GED, a minimum of five (5) years diagnosing, repairing, and/or maintaining HVAC equipment and/or lyophilizer refrigeration equipment within an industrial production or similar environment.

  • In addition to required experience, incumbent must have an EPA Universal Certification.

Additional requirements include:

  • Entry into Medical Surveillance Program (post hire).

  • Ability to work in confined spaces.

  • GMP gowning.

  • Ultra-low refrigeration.

  • Hydraulic experience.

  • Interpret PI&D drawings/schematics.

  • Perform mechanical overhauls and refrigerant reclaiming with proper refrigerant when necessary and maintain and repair compressor units.

  • Braze or solder parts to repair defective joints and leaks.

  • Trace electrical circuits, follow diagrams, and conduct tests with circuit testers and other equipment

  • Knowledge (experience) of various computer programs including Microsoft Office programs, and various maintenance databases.

  • Utilization of good people and communication skills (verbal and written).

  • Experience working in team-oriented atmosphere.

  • High level of quality of work, attention to details, compliance to established procedures.

  • High level of technical knowledge relating to refrigeration equipment and experience with control or management of compliance related documentation.
