Boehringer Ingelheim is currently seeking a talented and innovative Co-Op to join our Process Science department located at our Fremont facility. As a Co-Op, you will perform projects related to biochemical engineering, chemical engineering, or related sciences to study various aspects of bioprocessing. The scientists at Boehringer Ingelheim, Fremont California develop manufacturing processes for protein-based drugs. We are seeking scientists and engineers with a biology, protein chemistry, cell culture, fermentation or molecular biology background to join our team. The Co-Op will also be expected to present analysis and results from experiments orally to a group of scientists as frequently as a weekly basis and at conclusion of the Co-Op. There are positions in bioprocess engineering, analytical development, purification development, and cell culture development.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Unique to each individual internship but examples are asfollows:

  • Report to diverse team of scientists and engineers.

  • Gain real world industrial experience in process developmentareas in cell culture, protein purification and analytical sciences.

  • Gain exposure to core techniques for successful independentresearch projects (including but not limited to literature research, DOE,patents, novel high throughput instruments and presentation skills).

  • Applies academic and other experiential knowledge and skillsto complete assigned work with supervision.

  • Understands and applies basic scientific, math or otherbusiness principles with guidance.

  • Effectively interprets, assesses and communicates data inthe area assigned.

  • Complies with applicable regulations, policies andprocedures, performing all work in a safe manner.

  • Maintains proper records in accordance with SOPs andpolicies.


  • Must be a, Graduate Student in good academic standing.

  • Must have completed 12 credit hours within a related majorand/or other related coursework.

  • Overall, cumulative GPA (from last completed quarter) mustbe at least 3.200 (on 4.0 scale) or better (No rounding up).

  • Major must be related to the field of internship.

Desired Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • BS or MS with expertise in sterile fermentation techniques,preferably mammalian cell culture or protein purification or analyticaltechniques.

  • Strong engineering and/or molecular biology skills ideallyincluding experience

  • Experience with CHO cells is a plus.

  • Experience with protein purification such as chromatography,virus filtration, UFDF

  • Good written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to work in a team environment

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United Stateswithout restriction.

  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical(if required)

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
