Provides a broad range of legal services, typically to Clients at the ED level who control business activities and below. Level of counseling provided requires broader understanding of the impact decisions may have on the overall business, as the risks associated with incomplete advice are high. Duties include drafting of legal documents and provision of legal counsel. Should have acquired knowledge of law in at least two specialized areas (e.g., patents, FDA Regulatory, commercial, litigation, etc.) critical to maintaining business operations and be very knowledgeable about the products, competitors and regulatory environment of the company's businesses. Mentors more junior attorneys in areas of expertise.

Boehringer Ingelheim Fremont, Inc., located in Fremont, California, is a premier biopharmaceutical manufacturing site within the Boehringer Ingelheim (“BI”) group of companies and BI’s Biopharmaceutical Division. The BI Biopharmaceutical Division manages the CMC development and production of Biopharmaceuticals and drives the Boehringer Ingelheim Contract Manufacturing Business or "Boehringer Ingelheim BioXcellence" globally.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Advise on legalmatters for the Boehringer Ingelheim Fremont site, in particular with respectto the Contract Manufacturing Business and the Bioprocess andPharmaceutical Development function. Proactivelyidentify and advise with respect to risks associated with complex businessactivities using a solution based approach.

  • Work as a member ofthe global team of lawyers supporting the global Biopharmaceutical Division.

  • Draft and negotiate,as a part of cross-functional negotiation teams, complex agreements,particularly contract manufacturing agreements for biopharmaceuticals; adviseon all legal matters related to the performance under such agreements.

  • Be the primary legalcontact for the site head and site management team for legal matters for thesite and for sourcing for the site; confer with other in-house and outsidecounsel in specialized areas, where appropriate.

  • Have a strongunderstanding of state and federal laws, and act as legal subject matter expertin certain relevant areas of commercial law.

  • Play a proactive rolein the legal function and contribute to the progress of the legal function.


Please note: Candidate will be hired commensurate with their demonstrated experience.

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school

  • Director: At least eight (8) to ten (10) years relevant legal experience; admission to at least one State bar.

  • Associate Director: At least six (6) to eight (8) years relevant legal experience; admission to at least one State bar.

  • Excellent lawyerhaving a broad and thorough knowledge in international contract law and thedifferent areas of commercial law that are relevant for the Biopharmaceuticalsbusiness (e.g. pharmaceutical law, IP law and cGMP regulations)

  • Good negotiator withexperience in negotiating contracts in an international environment

  • Proactive team player

  • Business partneroriented mindset with the ability to interact with business partners worldwide atall levels of the organization

  • Excellent oral andwritten communication skills

  • Excellent organizationskills with the ability to prioritize and to effectively manage responsibilities

  • Demonstrate discretionand ability to maintain confidentiality of information

  • Adhere to Company policies and procedures; U.S. and International Law.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
